The Believing Game: Fluoride or Death

The purpose of the believing game is to write 2 paragraphs, one for each side of an argument.  There should be no way to to determine which direction I support.  The reader is then encouraged to try and figure out which one is my opinion and comment on the post.

Fluoride, its Slowly Killing You!
The use of fluoride in drinking water has always been very controversial among scientists and the public.  Should we allow other people to continue to put chemicals in our drinking water or are the benefits great enough to say that it should continue to happen?  In my opinion I believe that this practice should stop immediately.  There was a time and place that this was a good thing, but not anymore.  The time and age of tooth rot is over and adding fluoride to water isn’t helping anymore.  All it is doing is slowly poisoning us and the animals to which we feed water. In 1974 the EPA signed the Safe Drinking Water Act.  In this act they said that drinking water cannot contain more than 4mg/L of fluoride before it starts to have reverse effects.  The amount recommended that municipalities add to their city water is 2mg/L.  These numbers are so close that an overdose is bound to happen and has happened in the past. If an overdose does happen it can actually do the opposite of harden teeth.  It will actually weaken and make your bones brittle and weak.   In my opinion the addition of this poison needs to end and it needs to happen now.

Fluoride, Yes its Good for You!
The use of fluoride in drinking water has always been very controversial among scientists and the public.  Should we allow other people to continue to put chemicals in our drinking water or are the benefits great enough to say that it should continue to happen?  In my personal opinion I am all for keeping the fluoride in the water.  The health benefits far outweigh the risks of fluoride.  The initial reason for the addition of fluoride was because of tooth decay.  This has been the normal in the United States ever since the 1940s.  If you look at the top 30 largest cities in the US, 29 of those cities have fluoride added to their water.  The only exception is Portland, Oregon but they have been trying to get fluoride added to their water for years.  The amount of fluoride is so minimal that the percentage of people that actually have problems is almost nonexistent.  Most municipalities have their fluoride levels set to 0.7 to 1.2 mg/L.  This is nothing considering it is recommended that you take in 4 mg/L of fluoride a day.  This means that you need to drink 4 liters of water a day.  I am sure most people do not even get half that amount.  As you can see there is no harm to adding fluoride in your water, it is far more helpful than you might think.

  1. Hi Carl,
Great topic that you chose to write your assignment on. I didn't really know too much about this subject and didn't know how much fluoride was actually being put in water by the assorted municipalities! It seems like your first paragraph is where you stand on the subject of fluoride in our water. The paragraph itself seemed much stronger and had a little more information in it. Plus the language and tone you used in the paragraph made me really believe that you don't like the use of fluoride.

  2. Carl,
I also don't know very much about the topic. After reviewing both submission I also think that your post was the first. It seemed to be emotion based as opposed to information based, which always stands out a little more. Not that the first opinion doesn't have information included, but seemed to be written in response as opposed to an opening statement.
